Project: A sit-down dinner for 700, in the air, on the shore of Lake Michigan.

Karl's Event Rental, a national event rental company, accepted the challenge of erecting an 82-foot by 81-foot Losberger Clearspan tent on the roof of the War Memorial Center, 42 feet in the air, on the shore of Lake Michigan.

The event was a sit-down dinner for 700, and was not awarded to Karl's until three weeks before the event.

The roof location required two solutions. One, the roof was not able to support the concentrated load of the Clearspan legs, so Karl's constructed and installed wood pads at each leg to distribute the load. The second issue was that staking was impossible on the roof. Thus, Karl's used 204,000 pounds of ballast to secure the structure. This is greater than normal for a structure of this size because of the height (42 feet above grade) and the wind conditions off the lake. Even with a constant 35 mph wind, the event went off without a hitch.
